First Quarterly Export Briefing Lunch for 2009

"The Australian and Chinese Economies in 2009"

A review by John Edwards, Chief Economist HSBC, Sydney

Please note that this event is being organized by the Australia China Business Council which has kindly given us “member rates”. This is a great opportunity to come and network with ACBC members.

The current economic climate is extremely dynamic. This event is essential for business people seeking the very latest developments in China’s economic outlook and the implications for Australia from a leading economist.

Dr John Edwards is the Chief Economist for Australia for the global financial group, HSBC Bank.  In this position he advises the group and its clients on the economic outlook, the direction of exchange rates and interest rates, and on a range of economic policy issues.

Dr Edwards was formerly Chief Economist for SG Australia, and an adviser at Macquarie Bank. While at Macquarie he was also the economic adviser to the Australian member of the APEC Eminent Persons Group and to the Australian members of the APEC Business Council.

From 1991 to 1994 Dr Edwards was Principal Economic Adviser to the Treasurer and then Prime Minister, the Hon. Paul Keating.

Earlier in his career Dr Edwards was a political and economic journalist in Sydney and Canberra, and worked as a reporter for ten years in Washington. Immediately before joining Mr. Keating, he was the Sydney Morning Herald’s correspondent in Washington, DC.

Dr Edwards has published four books, including a best selling biography of the former Prime Minister entitled “Keating – the inside story”.

He holds Ph.D. and M Phil degrees in Economics from George Washington University and a BA from Sydney University.
